How to care for a stretch ceiling: cleaning and maintenance

A stretch ceiling never needs painting. How to clean it, what to avoid and what to do if water comes through from above.

A stretch ceiling is one of the easiest surfaces in a home to look after. It does not crack or peel and never needs painting. Still, it helps to know how to clean it properly so that it stays good-looking for many years.

How often to clean it

In a living room or bedroom, wiping the ceiling with a soft dry cloth once or twice a year is enough. In a kitchen, where steam and grease build up, clean it more often, for example whenever you give the kitchen a thorough clean.

What you need

  • a soft microfibre cloth or a sponge without a rough side,
  • lukewarm water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid,
  • a dry cloth to wipe the surface dry,
  • a stable ladder.

Cleaning step by step

  1. First remove the dust with a soft dry cloth. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush, but do not touch the film with it.
  2. Dip the cloth in the soapy water and wring it out well. A cloth that is too wet leaves marks.
  3. Wipe the ceiling with light pressure and without scrubbing. The film gives a little under your hand, which is completely normal.
  4. Finish a gloss ceiling with a dry microfibre cloth, wiping in one direction so that no streaks remain.

What not to use

  • abrasive sponges, scouring powders and stiff brushes,
  • solvents, acetone, petrol and bleach-based cleaners,
  • steam cleaners,
  • sharp objects; take off your rings before wiping too.

If you are not sure whether a cleaner is suitable, try it first on a small, less visible part of the ceiling.

Lights and heat

PVC film does not like high temperatures. Use LED bulbs in recessed lights, as they stay fairly cool, and do not replace them with stronger halogen bulbs. When changing a bulb, do not press on the film around the light.

If water comes through from above

If a neighbour floods your flat or the roof leaks, a PVC film usually holds the water. Do not pierce the film and do not try to let the water out yourself. Switch off the electricity in the room and call us: we drain the water and stretch the film again.

Damage

The film is tough, but a sharp object can cut it, for example the edge of a ladder or a piece of furniture during a move. Do not tape over a hole. Call us and we will check whether it can be repaired or the film needs replacing.

The film comes with a 10-year and the installation with a 1-year warranty. If you have a question about your ceiling, write to us or book a consultation.
